Information for International LL.M. Students
Each year, many foreign-trained LL.M. students attempt to find employment in the U.S., either permanently or on a temporary basis. Before you enroll in an LL.M. program it is important to have a realistic understanding of the U.S. job market for foreign-trained lawyers. Experience has shown that only a very small percentage of LL.M. graduates from all U.S. law schools find work in the U.S. following graduation, either temporarily or permanently. The challenges international LL.M. graduates face have only increased as a result of the current economic recession and tightening U.S. legal market. These challenges may apply to you even if you have outstanding academic and professional credentials.
If your objective is to improve your knowledge of the American legal system, an LL.M. degree is an excellent choice. If you want to work in the U.S. on a permanent basis, you should consider pursuing the J.D. degree.
For students who, despite the stiff competition and difficult market conditions, continue to seek employment in the U.S, the Professional Development staff provides counseling and special programs to help you in your job search process, including participation in the largest job fair for international LL.M. candidates in the country. We offer resume and cover letter writing workshops, interviewing and networking skills seminars, and individual counseling.
While foreign-trained LL.M. candidates face significant challenges finding legal positions in the U.S. after they graduate, many of our LL.M.s do obtain impressive opportunities in their home countries – and we look forward to working with you towards this goal.
