Class of 2011 Employment

The employment data listed below is provided by BU Law graduates and is based on survey questions provided by the National Association of Legal Career Professionals (NALP), the American Bar Association (ABA) and US News & World Report (US News). The statistics combine the NALP, ABA and US News employment data for February 15, 2012 (nine months after the Class of 2011 graduated).

The Class of 2011 experienced a very challenging year in the toughest hiring climate in recent memory, even in the private sector, traditionally a stronghold for BU Law graduates. The deferments of recent years, coupled with smaller law firm summer classes, decreased the number of 2L summer associate positions and permanent associate positions. For those considering law school with an interest in private practice, we believe that law firm hiring has stabilized and our current tracking confirms that the BU Law Class of 2012 will show a dramatic increase of graduates entering law firms, especially large law firms. Our private sector base is a solid one with BU Law graduates working in all of the AM Law 100 law firms. According to a study in the Journal of Legal Education, BU Law ranks #7 among feeder schools to the nation's largest legal markets and #12 for the number of partners in NLJ Top 100 law firms. And statistics published by the ABA show BU Law at 21st in the nation for the number of  Class of 2011 graduates starting their careers in NLJ 250 law firms.

After completing the surveys regarding employment at 9 months after graduation, we stayed connected to the Class of 2011, assisting them in their job searches and learning about their successes, as they relocated, secured jobs when employers knew they passed the bar exam, turned part-time positions into full-time, and got permanent job offers from fellowships. Consistent with student interest when they enrolled in law school, the majority of graduates with full-time positions are employed in the private sector by law firms and companies. Those graduates working for companies have launched careers in a wide range of industries as corporate counsel, consultants and industry advisers. Similarly, many graduates who sought positions in public service secured positions in a wide range of nonprofit organizations and government agencies that did not complete their hiring until after February 15.

One of the biggest contributors to BU Law students’ landing full-time attorney positions was their participation in the School’s two post-graduate fellowship programs. Through a highly competitive process, ten BU Law graduates from the Class of 2011 were awarded public service fellowships, which provided them with a stipend for 10 months of full-time work in under-resourced public service organizations throughout the United States and abroad. The fellowship hosts were the Environmental Defense Fund (NY), Public Counsel (CA), The Defender Association (WA), the Asylum Access Ecuador (Quito, Ecuador), Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, Wayne County Department of Social Services (NY), Massachusetts Superior Court, Massachusetts Land Court, the New England Pension Assistance Project (MA), and California Rural Legal Assistance Foundation. Eight of the ten fellows began attorney positions immediately after the fellowship ended with six joining the staffs of their host organizations and the others working at Tacoma  Public Defender Service (WA), Americans for Immigration Justice (FL), Missouri Attorney General, and Duane Morris LLP (MA).

The law school also offered other members of the Class of 2011 funding to work part-time in government agencies, nonprofit organizations and businesses. Of these part-time fellows, a significant majority are now employed as attorneys, many of them where they completed their fellowships and others with employers running the gamut from large, private firms to government agencies to the full variety of government and public interest organizations. Their many employers include DLA Piper (MA), AARP (DC), Mintz Levin (DC), New York City Department of Homeless Services, Innovative Business Law Group (MA), Hamilton County Prosecutor, Juvenile Court Division (OH), The Center for HIV Law and Policy (NY), San Diego District Attorney (CA), Lehigh University Office of the General Counsel (PA), U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (DC), Human Rights First (DC), Cumberland Court of Common Pleas (PA), University of Akron Research Foundation (OH), Supreme Court of Delaware, Federal Reserve Bank (NY), Installation & Service Technology (MO), and many more.
