Thursday, September 18th, 4:30-6:30 pm, GSU Terrace Lounge (directions below) 1Ls, 2Ls, and 3Ls, join us to celebrate public interest at BU Law and hear from the Dean, our guest speaker and alumna Veronica Serrato (’88), Professor David Breen and a student panel involved in public interest and pro bono. Refreshments will be provided. Guest Speaker: Veronica Serrato is a leader and zealous advocate for low income and immigrant residents in the Boston area with extensive experience in nonprofit management and social service. Ms. Serrato is the Executive Director of Greater Boston Citizenship Initiative (“GBCI”). GBCI is a nonprofit program that works to naturalize legal permanent residents living in the Boston area by partnering with immigrant, community-based, and direct service organizations to remove obstacles to naturalization and promote the value of citizenship. The daughter of naturalized citizens herself, Ms. Serrato has a personal connection to this work as well as decades of experience in legal services. Ms. Serrato came to GBCI from her position as Senior Staff Attorney at the Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP), where she was responsible for the training, mentoring and management of pro bono attorneys and their client work. She has extensive experience working with low income and impoverished immigrants. Prior to her time with VLP, she handled domestic violence cases at the Wilmer Hale Legal Services Center of Harvard Law School and at Casa Myrna Vazquez, New England's largest shelter and legal services program for victims of domestic violence. She understands the intricacies of government, a critical component to navigating some of the challenges of attaining citizenship; her background includes experience as an Assistant District Attorney at the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office as well as a Hearing Officer for the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families and the Department of Mental Health. During law school, Ms. Serrato was a Note Editor for the Boston University Law Review. Ms. Serrato currently serves on the board of the Massachusetts Guardianship Association and is deeply committed to community work in the Boston region. She was selected as a 2013 Top Women in the Law award recipient by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly and awarded the 2014 BU Law Public Interest Project (PIP) Pro Bono Alumni Award. She is a member of the Boston Bar Association, Women’s Bar Association, National Hispanic Bar Association, and the Massachusetts Association of Hispanic Attorneys. She is a graduate of Harvard University (A.B. 1984) and Boston University School of Law (J.D. 1988). She is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts, and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Directions to the GSU Terrace Lounge: Located on the second floor of the George Sherman Union (GSU) at 771 Commonwealth Avenue, the Terrace Lounge is accessible from the main staircase at the front of the GSU as well as from the elevator bank at the back of the dining room.
