The International Law Society and the Law Student Affairs’ Office present a Faculty Brown Bag Lunch Talk
“The Constitutionality of Decolonization by Associated Statehood: Puerto Rico's Legal Status Reconsidered”
Featuring: Professor Gary Lawson and Professor Robert Sloane
Puerto Rico’s legal status reflects an ongoing tension between international and constitutional law. Both Professors Gary S. Lawson and Robert D. Sloane agree that it is unclear whether Puerto Rico’s current arrangement with the United States conforms to customary international and treaty obligations and whether it is permissible under the United States Constitution. Our lecturers examine various ways in which Puerto Rico and the United States may resolve these underappreciated legal tensions. Above all, this event seeks to reframe and facilitate a long-overdue discussion about how to reconcile U.S. international obligations toward Puerto Rico with the Constitution.
