Michael Baram co-founded the first environmental law firm in Boston, Bracken & Baram, where he was a partner for many years, and also served as a member of the MIT faculty and as assistant dean of its graduate school. In addition to providing legal services for private and public sector clients, he has consulted for numerous organizations including the EPA, United Nations, the European community, U.S. Congress and Chemical Manufacturers Association. He also has served on several expert committees of the National Academy of Sciences, the Department of Energy and other organizations.

At BU Law, Professor Baram teaches environmental law, corporate management of risk, products liability and a new university-wide course on biotechnology law and ethics. He also has directed the School’s Center for Law and Technology, hosted national symposia and directed research projects in these fields. In the last few years, symposia have been held on legal issues involved in the implementation of new communication and genetic technologies. Among Professor Baram’s many publications are books on topics such as alternatives to regulation and managing chemical risks, and articles and reports on a broad range of law/technology topics such as transgenic agriculture and biosafety, protection of human subjects in clinical trials, the decommissioning of nuclear reactors and social control of science and technology.
