William Straus has been a Massachusetts State Representative since 1992 and is now serving in his eighth term. He currently is the Vice Chairman of the Joint Committee on Revenue and also is a member of the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection.

He began his work in government as an aide in the U.S. Senate working for Senator John Culver (D- Iowa) from 1978 through 1980. From 1982-1988 he worked as a Special Assistant District Attorney in Bristol County, Massachusetts.

His other government service includes serving as a gubernatorial appointee to the Massachusetts Hazardous Waste Facility Site Safety Council (1987-1992), a member of his town’s Conservation Commission responsible for wetlands protection (1987-1992) and current service as the designee of the House of Representatives to the Massachusetts Fisheries Recovery Commission.

He is also engaged in the private practice of law with an office in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
