Karol K. Sparks

Karol K. Sparks is a partner in the financial institutions group of Barack Ferrazzano LLP in Chicago. Her practice concentration relates to corporate activities of financial institutions, with a special emphasis on the distribution of annuities, insurance, and mutual funds through banks, thrifts, and credit unions and on commercial and consumer deposit products, including treasury management products and the issuance and distribution of prepaid cards and similar products by banks and non-banks. She is a member of the Illinois, New York, Indiana, and California bars. In 2004, Ms. Sparks was appointed to the council of the ABA Section of Business Law for a term ending in 2008. She previously chaired the Banking Law Committee of the ABA Section of Business Law from 1998 to 2002. She currently is chair of the ABA Section of Business Law’s Publication Board. Ms. Sparks is the author of The Keys to Banking Law: a Handbook for Lawyers, published by the ABA Section of Business Law in 2012. She has also authored the legal treatise Insurance Activities of Banks, published by Aspen Law & Business in 1998 and updated annually. She is a frequent lecturer and educator on issues relating to the regulation of financial institutions. Ms. Sparks served as Distinguished Practitioner in Residence at Elon University School of Law in Greensboro, North Carolina for a two year term from August 2008 to May 2010, was an adjunct professor at the University of Iowa College of Law from 2001-2008, and is an adjunct professor of law at Wake Forest University School of Law, teaching secured transactions, financial services regulation and contract drafting.
