BU Law Alumni Listed in Top 10 Lawyers of Their Field

Three BU alumni were listed in the United States Lawyer Rankings of 2007 as Top 10 Lawyers in their field.  Richard M. Belanger (’75), a partner at Sidley Austin in Washington, D.C., and John J. Maalouf (LL.M. ’94), chairman of Maalouf Law Firm, LLC with offices in New York City and Hong Kong were both listed in the top 10 lawyers of the area of International Trade and Finance for the second year in a row.  Joel G. Chefitz ('76), a partner at McDermott Will & Emery LLP, was listed as one of the top ten antitrust lawyers.

Belanger counsels companies, industry associations and governments on international trade issues. He has served in the U.S. Customs Service’s Office of Regulations and Rulings, and he currently co-chairs the Import Committee of the Joint Industry Group and serves as counsel and legislative advocate for the Business Alliance for Customs Modernization.  Some of his published works on customs issues have been featured in the American Bar Association. 

Maalouf advises clients on various matters, including international finance, private placements, foreign investment in China and the Middle East and on securities offerings by multilateral financial institutions and government-sponsored enterprises. Some of his most prominent cases have been highlighted on 60 Minutes, 20/20, CNN and in the Wall Street Journal.

Chefitz is a trial and antitrust lawyer and heads the Chicago Securities Litigation Practice Group. For over 30 years, Chefitz has achieved success in complex business litigation, including sports and constitutional litigation, class action defense, mergers and acquisitions and professional responsibility. While in law school, he was Note and Case Editor of the Boston University Law Review. He was also awarded the faculty prize as the graduate demonstrating the greatest legal scholarship.
