Alan R. Stern Housing Scholar Program honors the memory of BU Law student

The Morin Center for Banking and Financial Law and the family of Alan Stern, a BU Law student who passed away in 2008, have created the Alan R. Stern Housing Scholar Program in Stern’s memory. The scholarship was created to honor Stern’s passion for helping those in need.

Stern believed in the law as an instrument for social change and policy, particularly in the political arena. Students selected as “Stern Scholars” embody the qualities exemplified by Stern and pursue solutions to housing issues through focused research and study.

“Alan was a remarkable student and person, who gave so much to the School and to his family and friends,” said Associate Dean for Student Affairs Christine Marx. “He was a member of the Review of Banking and Financial Law and had a particular passion for issues related to affordable housing.”

Scholars are chosen based upon their commitment to public citizenship as demonstrated by Stern. Selection for the scholarship is based on a submitted research proposal addressing an issue related to housing, followed by an interview process. Scholars receive financial and professional support from the Scholar Committee, and they are invited to attend a yearly conference on housing issues. The fellowship culminates in the scholar writing an article for the Review of Banking and Financial Law based upon their research.

Courtney Hunter ('10)

This year’s Alan R. Stern Scholar is Courtney Hunter (’10). Hunter will be pursuing her interests in housing and finance by researching the foreclosure crisis in Boston and how the city has responded. Hunter received her Masters in Public Administration from the University of South Carolina in 2003, focusing her studies on urban development.

“I started off wanting to be a city planner, but got a bit waylaid by life,” said Hunter. “When I started law school, I really loved my property class. My 1L summer, I worked at the WilmerHale Legal Services Center representing homeowners facing foreclosure. That job combined my interest in housing issues with financial law.”

BU Law student Amanda Ligatti was named the first Stern Scholar in November 2008. Her research focused on a multidisciplinary approach to solving the affordable housing crisis by analyzing current affordable housing programs and issues in the Boston area. After this piece was published in the Spring edition of the Review, Amanda was offered and accepted a position as an editor for the Review this year.
