Alumna Maria Lopez ('78) Rules the Bench on TV

Outspoken former Massachusetts Superior Court Judge Maria Lopez ('78), recently featured in The Boston Globe and the Improper Bostonian, now appears on her own syndicated half-hour show called "Judge Maria Lopez." Lopez, the first Latina appointed to the Massachusetts Superior Court, presides over the makeshift courtroom in the show, broadcast to stations in 15 cities.

Havana-born Lopez began her career as a legal services lawyer representing civil matters for disadvantaged, underprivileged and marginalized members of society. She also served as assistant attorney general in the Civil Rights Division of the Massachusetts Attorney General's office. Before her appointments to the Massachusetts District and Superior Courts, Lopez served as counsel to the Office for Refugees and Immigrants enforcing the state's civil rights laws.
