BU Law and BU Darfur Coalition to Sponsor International Day of Service

On November 9, the Boston University Black Law Students Association and the Boston University Darfur Coalition sponsored a “Day of Service,” which included a panel discussion featuring BU alumna Rev. Gloria White-Hammond, chair of the Million Voices for Darfur campaign and founder of My Sister’s Keeper.

Rev. Gloria White-Hammond led the discussion titled “Darfur’s Silent Children: What Will It Take to Stop Genocide?” White-Hammond founded My Sister’s Keeper in 2002, a women’s group that works with women in Sudan in restructuring their communities. Additional panelists included Sarah Cleto Royal, program director of My Sister’s Keeper, and Bec Hamilton, representative from the Genocide Intervention Network.

Throughout the day students gathered in the BU Law lobby to assemble school kits for refugee children, which included simple materials such as paper, rulers, pencils and crayons. Large-scale “Speak Your Peace” postcards were also signed and mailed to President George Bush and Senator John Kerry. Paper dolls were sold and added to the postcards to highlight the 500 people killed daily in Darfur.
