BU Law scores a Beantown Shootout victory for public interest
At this year’s “Beantown Shootout” basketball game, students from BU Law and BC Law battled it out on the hard-court all in the name of public interest. Proceeds from ticket and raffle sales, divided between the two law schools, were used for public interest grants. BU Law won this year’s shootout, taking back the cup from BC and raising more grant money than in any previous year. >>Scroll down for photo slideshow. BU Law’s evening kicked off with a pep rally, complete with team introductions, poster-making and 3 dozen pizzas donated from BU Law faculty and staff. The shootout, held in BU’s CASE center, drew a crowd of nearly 300 spectators. This year’s team, which drew from all three J.D. classes as well as the graduate LL.M. programs, included: Josh Goldstein (‘11), Dan Flaherty (‘11), Ryan Murphy (‘11), Nick Dean (‘11), Alyssa Nugent (‘11), Keith Spence (‘11), Joe McVicker (‘11), Marissa Urban (‘12), Brandon Pratt (‘12), Ephram Pierre (‘12), Benedict Idemundia (‘12), Michelle Marion (‘10), Sean Brogan (‘10) and Reginald Champagne ( LL.M. in Banking & Financial Law '10). The team was coached by Josh Cooper, assistant director for Student Affairs, with assistance from Anuj Khetarpal (‘10). It was an electric night, with the lead flip-flopping through the second half until the game came down to the last 20 seconds. BC Law took the lead by one point, and BU had to get the ball up the court and work the clock for the last shot. BC hounded BU’s two hottest shooters of the night, and in the waning seconds, they swung the ball wide to Reginald Champagne on the wing, who, with one second left, nailed the 15-footer. The gym erupted! BC called a timeout, and after a failed Hail-Mary attempt, with the remaining second, BU Law took back the Beantown Shootout Cup with the victory. The game was a win for the BU Law team, but more importantly, it was a success for public interest at both schools. Public Interest Project (PIP) president, Lindsey Gil (‘10), along with her classmates, helped to organize the event. The shootout, held on October 8, was the first of many events for PIP this year. Other events include the upcoming celebration of PIP’s 25th Anniversary, as well as the 17th Annual Public Interest Project Auction. The group hopes to see everyone at these events to support and celebrate public interest at BU Law. Reported by Josh Cooper
