Finding Success with the Class of 2012: Seven Graduates Join Goodwin Procter

BU Law graduates enter the job market with practice-ready skills, making them highly desirable candidates for firms big and small. Every year a number of new alumni join Goodwin Procter LLP—in fact, this global firm hired the most members of the Class of 2012, with seven full-time associates joining last fall. Nearly a year later, we caught up with several of them to ask, "How has BU Law prepared you for practice?"

quote Serving as an editor on the Law Review trained me in many of the core skills required of a junior corporate associate. These are, for example, reading with a careful editorial eye, exhaustive attention to detail, learning to spot legal issues and ask critical questions, and communicating clearly with others. These skills became immediately useful upon entering the firm. quotePatrick Jiang

quote At BU Law there is the real opportunity for students to shape their own education through a variety of different classroom and out-of-classroom experiences. I took classes taught by several practicing or formerly practicing attorneys. Among those was Private Equity and Venture Capital. From that class I learned a lot about both the law that shapes private equity and venture financing, as well as the practical mechanics of actually striking and structuring a private equity or venture capital deal. quoteRobert Coniglio

quote In addition to the perennial top rankings of BU Law’s faculty and strong reputation nationally, BU Law had several offerings that called to me. The expansive study abroad program and BU Law’s emphasis on transactional work, in particular, were very attractive to me, and I did my best to take advantage of those opportunities. They laid a really strong foundation for a career as a transactional attorney. quoteBrandon Middleton-Pratt

quoteBU was a great choice for me because I was able to take tax law courses in both the J.D. and LL.M. Programs. The tax course offerings at BU are extensive, and they provide a strong foundation in tax law and exposure to issues that arise in practice. quoteDiana Myers

quote My very first assignment involved a Stock Purchase Agreement between a start-up company and its private investors. I immediately knew what to look for because of a course I took at BU Law. I can’t imagine how tough it would have been without that class. Also, our orientation to Goodwin included an introduction to basic contract concepts that generally aren’t covered in traditional law courses, but I had studied all of those concepts in-depth in a contract drafting class. quoteMatthew Stayman

quote BU Law's Private Equity & Venture Capital Financing class gave me a first-hand glimpse into the life cycle of private equity deals. “Deal classes” such as this one gave me practical experience in negotiation and client counseling, skills I’ve already put to use as a first-year associate. quoteVeronica Zhang
