Student Employment

Although the BU School of Law discourages students from working during the school year, opportunities to work part time are available both at the law school and through the University at large. Students who choose to work may work no more than 20 hours a week and should review the American Bar Association's rules and guidelines for law student employees.

Contact Priscilla Louie at (617) 353-0409 in the School of Law Personnel/Payroll Services Office with questions. The office is located on the fourth floor of the law tower, in room 452.

All new BU Law student employees must complete the I-9 Employment and Eligibility Form within three days of starting work. If the I-9 form is not completed within three days of starting work, the student must stop working until the I-9 is submitted. Students are encouraged to complete the I-9 form before starting work.

BU Law student employees who are U.S. citizens or legal residents must provide original documents showing proof of both identity and eligibility to work in the United States at the time they are completing the I-9 form in room 452. Acceptable documents are listed on the back page of the I-9 form which may be accessed by clicking here or at http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/i-9.pdf

Student employees should also bring a check from their bank account to set up direct deposit. To access the direct deposit form, please click here or download it from: http://www.bu.edu/hr/bu_benefits/print_library/forms/dirdeposit_weekly.pdf

International students must complete the I-9 form at the International Scholars and Students Office (ISSO) at 19 Deerfield Street, 2nd Floor, Boston, MA 02215. The I-9 form must be completed by the third day of the start date. International students who do not have a Social Security number must have their work supervisor complete the SSN Certification Form which may be accessed by clicking here or go to http://www.bu.edu/isso/forms/ssn_certification.pdf

The SSN Certification form must be printed on the department letterhead of the student's supervisor. The student's supervisor must complete and sign the form. Internationals must bring their passport, I-20, I-94, BU ID, etc to ISSO when completing the I-9 form and/or SSN Certification.

Please note: ISSO is closed every Wednesday morning until 12PM. International students may complete their I-9 forms at ISSO during the I-9 Walk-In Hours of Tuesday 9-10AM and Thursday 1-2PM or they may call ISSO at 617-353-3565 to set up an appointment to complete their I-9 form.

Student employees enter their hours worked on the Student Time Entry Process (STEP), which is accessible via the Student Link (www.bu.edu/studentlink).

To access STEP, student employees need to go to Student Link, click on the Work Tab, select Employee Time Entry option, enter their BU login name and Kerberos password. On the top half of the screen, the student will click on the job (in red under "title"). Using drop down tabs, enter the hours for the current week and include any breaks taken. Once the hours are entered, click Calculate Hours. On the next screen, students have the options of changing, saving, or submitting to supervisor. To submit hours, check box that reads: "I certify that this is an accurate record of the hours I have worked" and click on Submit to Supervisor. Important: Once you submit your hours to your supervisor, you can no longer edit them, so please check your time entry carefully before clicking Submit to Supervisor.

Student employees must have an I-9 form on file, be in compliance with University regulations, be registered as students, and have contacted Priscilla Louie in BU Law Payroll before they can be hired on STEP.

The BU Law deadline for student employees to submit their time entries is Thursday 11:59pm for the current week. Students who work on Friday or the weekend should forecast their hours and then submit their time entry by Thursday.

Checks are issued every Friday. The Law Payroll Office sorts and sends the checks up to the individual departments. Students may pick up their checks after 1pm from their departments. Research assistants may pick up their checks from Martha Totten in Room 1040A. Please bring a photo ID when you pick up your check. Martha Totten may be reached at 617-358-5374.
