Legislative Programs
Application Information

The Programs:

BU Law offers three different clinical opportunities to participate in the legislative process:

  • Legislative Counsel Clinic gives students the opportunity to work on several legislative projects which help students relate—and test—the Constitutional and legal theories discussed in class to real life situations;
  • Legislation Policy & Drafting Clinic provides an intensive writing and research experience by drafting legislation and producing an in-depth analysis of the proposed bill;
  • Legislative Internship Program gives students an “insiders” perspective on the Legislature by working directly with a state senator or representative and discussing problems faced by legislatures and legislators during the classroom component.

Application Process:

These clinics are one semester programs for 2L and 3L students.  The application states your intention to register for a Legislative Program and asks for your preference as to program and semester.  If you do not receive your first choice, we will consider you for your second choice and will include you on the waiting list for your first choice.

Please note that you may only participate in one Legislative Program per semester, and you may only participate in more than one clinic in a semester with the express permission of the directors of both programs.

The acceptance and waiting lists for these two programs will be posted on the door the door of Room 1220 in mid-May and on the Program’s web page.

Because these programs must recruit clients and projects before the semester begins, you must confirm your enrollment with Professor Kealy 30 days prior to the beginning of the semester for which you have applied.

If you are admitted to a Legislative Program, but choose not to participate, please notify Professor Kealy as quickly as possible so we may admit another student from the waiting list.

Application Deadline:

Students interested in participating in a Legislative Program during the 2008-2009 academic year must complete the Legislative Programs Application & Preference Form and submit it electronically by Tuesday, April 29, 2008. Applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space-available basis.

Questions:

Please direct questions about the programs or application process to Professor Sean Kealy at (617) 353-8373 or skealy@bu.edu.
