Apply for Scholarship Aid
Due May 1, 2009
Limited scholarship funds may be available to students who have not previously received one. Applicants are considered strictly on the basis of financial need. Instructions have changed for this year; please read carefully and check with the Law Financial Aid Office if you have any questions.
If you did not receive a scholarship for 2008-09, please complete the following forms:
- Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
(complete student information sections only) - School of Law Continuing Students Financial Aid Application
(If you are a Dean’s Scholar, you do not need to file this form.) - International students should complete the form found here.
- Stafford/Direct Loan Processing Request Form
- 2008 Federal Tax Returns and W-2 forms OR Non-Filing Statements and W-2 Forms for you, your spouse (if applicable) and your parents.
- Need Access
Must be completed one time during your law school career. If you have not applied in a prior year, you must complete this form, including parental information, to be considered for a scholarship.
If you completed the Need Access Form in a prior year, this form is acceptable as well and students do not need to complete it again.
Income Tax Returns
Tax returns must be signed - if you filed your return electronically, don't forget to sign it before you send it to the Law Financial Aid Office.
- If you did not file a 2008 federal tax return, please complete a Statement of Non-Filing Status.
- If your parents did not file a 2008 federal tax return, have them complete a Parent Non-Filing Statement. Please attach the W-2 forms to the statement.
- If you did not keep a copy of your federal tax return, you may request a free transcript from the IRS by submitting Form 4506 to them. This form is available to download from the IRS Web site.
- If you or your parents have an extension to file your tax return after April 15, please submit a copy of the extension application (IRS Form 4868) to the Law Financial Aid Office.
Parental Information
In order for BU Law to equitably distribute our scholarship funds, we require that applicants file parental information. Although many parents do not contribute to their children’s graduate education costs, they may still be a resource for some students. Thus, we believe that viewing the potential family contribution as a whole is the fairest and most accurate way to award need-based aid.
You may submit a written, detailed request for a waiver of parental information prior to the May 1 filing deadline. Waivers are granted on a case-by-case basis, at the discretion of the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid.
Students who received a waiver in a prior year do not need to reapply for the waiver.
Important Note - Please be aware that we cannot renew your financial aid or process your loan applications if you have a balance of $99 or greater on your student account for the prior academic year.
