Exit Counseling
Students who borrowed loans through the Federal Direct Stafford Loan Program and/or the Perkins Loan Program while at BU Law are required to complete an Exit Counseling Session.
The Exit Counseling Session is an opportunity for the University to remind you of the repayment terms that apply to your federal loans and to inform you of the repayment options that you may have.
The Law Financial Aid Office conducts Exit Counseling Sessions in March and April for students graduating in May. January graduates should contact our office for an appointment.

The Law Financial Aid Office will provide the required exit counseling information and answer questions regarding loan repayment as a part of this program. Attending the financial aid portion of this program will count as satisfying the Exit Counseling requirement.
We will provide information for federal and private loans regarding loan repayment options, consolidation, and some basic debt management principles that could make your life after law school easier. We will include information on the new loan repayment options (Income Based Repayment and Loan Forgiveness) available as a result of the CCRAA.
Additional sessions may be scheduled after March 27 on an as needed basis. Students do have the option of making an appointment to speak to a counselor one-on-one to get information on their personal loan repayment options.
Students may also complete the Exit Counseling Session online.
Perkins Loans
Graduating 3L's who received any Perkins Loan funds while at BU Law must attend an Exit Counseling session offered by the Student Loan Department. The Exit Counseling offered by the Law Financial Aid Office cannot be used to meet this requirement.
Perkins Loan recipients have two choices:
- attend the Exit Counseling offered by the law school and the Perkins Exit session (2 sessions) OR…
- attend the Exit Counseling for the Perkins Loan (offered by the Student Loan Department – 1 session)
Perkins Loan Exit Counseling sessions will be offered in late March. Students should receive notification about the specific times and locations for these sessions. If you do not receive any information, you should contact the Student Loan Department at 617.353.2340 for more information.
The Student Loan Department is an office within the Student Accounts Office and will oversee the repayment of your Perkins Loan.
Debt Management
Students interested in more detailed information and debt management strategies may make an appointment with the BU Law Office of Financial Aid to discuss their student loan borrowing.
Tip - Access the National Student Loan Database System online. The database maintains records for all your federal loans, including the outstanding balance and lender contact information.
