Academic Information

Course or Seminar

Each year the Course Selection Materials include specified courses or seminars that allow a certain number of students to write papers in satisfaction of the Upper-class Writing Requirement. Keep in mind that some courses and seminars allow only a limited number of students to satisfy the requirement through that course or seminar. Interested students must be sure to discuss the option with the professor as early as possible during the add/drop period. All students are required to obtain advance written approval from the instructor by the end of the add/drop period. A part-time faculty member may supervise the work with the additional approval of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.

All students enrolled in one of the Legislation Clinics (General Legislation, Intellectual Property Legislation, or Health & Environmental Legislation) may fulfill the writing requirement through satisfactory completion of the research report required for the Legislation Clinics. Students pursuing this option to fulfill the writing requirement must complete and file the Intent Form, but the form does not need to be signed by the professors. A student enrolled in the Legislative Internship Program may fulfill the requirement through satisfactory completion of a research report supervised by the professor.

Please note: The shorter final paper required for the program does not itself fulfill the requirement. Students pursuing this option must complete and file the Intent Form, and the form must be signed by the professor.
