Paperwork Required for Payment
What paperwork do I need to fill out to get paid?
Please note that the I-9 must be filled out before you start working. If you are working and have not filled out the I-9 you must stop working until the I-9 is completed. Please click on your employment status below for details:
- I Have Worked for BU in the Past
- I Have Never Worked for BU (U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents)
- I Have Never Worked for BU (International)
Employees that Have Worked at BU Before
Please come to the payroll office located in room 452. If you worked at BU as a student but you are no longer a student you will need to complete your paperwork again because your employment status has switched. See "I Have Never Worked for BU" below for instructions.
Student Employees (U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents)
You will need to come to room 452 to fill out the following documents:
- The I-9 is the employment eligibility form. In order to complete the I-9 you will need to bring certain documents with you to the office. The following options are the most common:
- US Passport
- Permanent Resident Card
- Driver's License or School ID and Social Security Card
- Driver's License or School ID and Birth Certificate
- The W-4 is used to claim either a number of allowances or exempt on federal taxes. You cannot claim both a number of allowances and exempt.
- The M-4 is the same as the W-4 except that it is for Massachusetts state taxes.
- Direct Deposit is mandatory for all University employees. Students may sign up for direct deposit through the Student Link (instructions).
- Students must also fill out the Student Worker Information Form.
Casual and Permanent Employees (U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents)
- The I-9 is the employment eligibility form. Upon being hired by the University you will receive an email from Tricia Papetti, the Onboarding Specialist for Human Resources, that will detail when your appointment to complete your I-9 has been scheduled as well as what you need to bring with you to complete the form.
Upon completion of the I-9 at Human Resources, casual and permanent employees should come to room 452 in the Law Tower to complete tax documents:
- The W-4 is used to claim either a number of allowances or exempt on federal taxes. You cannot claim both a number of allowances and exempt.
- The M-4 is the same as the W-4 except that it is for Massachusetts state taxes.
- Direct Deposit is mandatory for all University employees. Permanent employees and casual employees with a Kerberos password may sign up through BUworks Central (instructions). If you are unable to complete your direct deposit information online, for whatever reason, please complete the Direct Deposit Form and bring it to room 452 along with a voided check.
- Permanent employees must also complete the New Hire Data Form.
International Employees
All international employees must fill out the I-9 at ISSO. ISSO is located at 888 Commonwealth Ave, 2nd Floor. The walk-in hours to complete the I-9 are: Tuesday 9-10am or Wednesday 2-5pm. If neither of these times works you may call ISSO at (617) 353-3565 to set up an appointment. Please note that ISSO is closed every Wednesday morning until 12pm. International Student Employees
If you do not have a social security number: International students without a social security number must have their supervisor fill out the Social Security Number Certification Form. The SSN Certification Form must be printed on the department letterhead and then the completed form must be brought to ISSO (888 Commonwealth Ave, 2nd Floor, 617.353.3565) along with the student's passport, I-20, I-94, BU ID, etc. ISSO will provide further instructions to the Social Security Office. Once you have received your social security card please bring the card to ISSO and then to room 452 of the Law Tower.
If you do have a social security number: Please bring your passport, I-20, I-94, social security card, BU ID, etc. to ISSO in order to fill out your I-9. Once your I-9 has been completed please come to room 452 of the Law Tower.
