In addition to holding individual advising appointments and providing students with substantive resources related to their job or internship search, the LLM Professional Development Office organizes many workshops and events each academic year, including information sessions, career panels, networking opportunities and hands-on workshops. Here are some examples of the many programs offered to LLM students each year:
Professional Development Presentations and Workshops
Job Search Overview
At the start of the academic year, we give LLM an overview of how to approach a US internship/job search and strategies for updating resumes, writing cover letters and networking.
US Bar Exam Preparation Series
Before key bar exam-related deadlines, we walk students through the bar application process for foreign-trained applicants for the most popular bar exams so students know what to expect and can prepare their documents in a timely and effective manner.
How to Write a US Resume and Cover Letter
In the fall semester, we run two workshops that walk students through how to write a US-style resume and cover letter, both of which are essential for a successful US job search and for networking in the US.
Pro Bono Information Session
This program provides a detailed overview of BU Law’s Pro Bono program and how LLM students can get involved and gain work experience.
Pathways to Employment in the US
Practicing attorneys and experts in immigration law moderate a discussion on strategies to position and market oneself favorably to US employers with the goal of securing access to employment in the US.
Interview Skills Presentation
The LLM Professional Development Office holds this presentation at the start of the spring semester to prepare both international and domestic students for job and internship interviews.
Mock Interview Workshop
LLM Professional Development holds a week-long series of mock interviews with students preparing for upcoming interviews, or for those who anticipate interviews in the future. Mock interviews are also available all year during advising appointments.
Alumni Panels and Networking Events
Banking and Financial Law Program and American Law Program Orientation Career Panels
During these informative panel discussions, alumni of BU Law’s LLM programs speak about their career experiences. These events are an opportunity for LLMs to learn about graduates’ practice areas and gain insight and advice into entering various practice areas in the US.
LLM Alumni Panel on U.S. Job Search Strategies
This event features foreign-trained LLM alumni, speaking about their current work and strategies for obtaining an internship or permanent position in the US. The panelists include alumni working at law firms, companies, international organizations, and financial institutions.
Tax Careers Luncheon
Every fall, we invite Tax LLM alumni from different employment settings to join us for lunch in a round-robin, speed-networking style session. This is an invaluable opportunity to learn more about tax careers and network with alumni who work at top law and accounting firms and banks.
LLM Discovery Series
Each spring, the LLM Professional Development Office organizes a series of events in downtown Boston designed to expose American Law Program LLMs to key aspects of US legal practice. The events feature attorneys and judges, speaking about their work, including its international dimensions. Past visits have included meetings at law firms, pharmaceutical companies and the US Federal Court and Massachusetts state court.
