Law School Update
Our New Dean
The past year was nothing short of stellar for BU Law. The school year began under new leadership, with Professor Maureen O’Rourke assuming the mantle of permanent Dean in May 2006, after serving as interim Dean for two years and as Associate Dean for Administration and Associate Dean for Academics before that. Recent Accolades
Once again BU Law has been named as America’s #1 ranked law faculty in Teaching Quality (The Leiter Report). The Princeton Review has placed us second in the nation in faculty quality. In specialty areas, we are # 5 in health law; #10 in tax; and #12 in intellectual property, according to U.S. News and World Report. The value of your degree has never been higher.
Entering Classes
This fall, the School’s four LL.M. programs welcomed 167 students from 40 countries. We welcomed an entering J.D. class of 269 students from 42 states and six foreign countries, with a median LSAT score of 165 – the 93rd percentile.
Conferences and Events
We continue to showcase our faculty through important and timely conferences. In November, we hosted “Software Patents in America.” In September, a conference entitled “Extraordinary Powers in Ordinary Times” explored the political, ethical and constitutional issues raised when the law responds to emergencies such as natural disasters, disease and violence.
This spring promises to be just as busy. Among several events will be the annual Shapiro Lecture, to be delivered by Samantha Power, whose book, A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide, was awarded the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for general non-fiction. In March, the annual Pike Conference will be on The Nuremberg Doctors' Trial: 60 Years Later. The conference will examine the impact of the Nuremberg Code on international and U.S. law regarding human experimentation and the role of physicians in euthanasia of people with disabilities. In May, we’ll be hosting another intellectual property law conference: “What Does the Economics of Property Teach Intellectual Property Scholars?”
Recent talks from overseas visitors have included Robert Grondine, a J.D. alumnus and senior partner of White & Case LLP's Tokyo office, who provided insight on how to prepare for and achieve a career in international legal practice.
In October, Professor Louise Gullifer, the on-site director of BU Law’s study abroad program at Oxford University, presented a lecture entitled “Contracts, The UCC and the Vienna Convention on International Sales of Goods” and also guest taught several of Professor Wally Miller’s first-year contracts classes.
In November, Dr. Sima Samar, chair of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission, discussed "The Fragile Future of Afghanistan: Human Rights, Justice and Security" in an event co-sponsored by BU Law and the Global Health Initiative at Boston University.

New Faculty
Three new faculty members have joined the school: Kristin Collins (pictured top), Rob Sloane (center) and Chuck Whitehead (bottom). All three have international interests. After graduating from Yale Law School, Kristin served as a senior fellow at the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (IDASA) in Cape Town, where she conducted research on the South African Judiciary. Her research interests include gender and law, civil procedure and federal courts. Rob practiced international law at Debevoise and Plimpton and is teaching Introduction to International Law and Transnational Criminal Law. Charles Whitehead has 18 years of experience in the United States and abroad, focusing on corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions, both as a law firm practitioner and as general counsel in two multinational financial services firms. He is teaching Corporations and Securities Regulations.
Pro Bono Program
This year, BU Law launched a new voluntary Pro Bono Program which enables LL.M. students to serve unmet legal needs in the Boston area, throughout the United States and around the world. LL.M. students in the program perform 12 hours of law-related service during their LL.M. year (35 hours for J.D. students, over three years), working on behalf of organizations dedicated to underrepresented groups and or social issues. Upon completion, students receive a notation on their law school transcripts confirming participation in the program.
New Web Site and New Look
The school year ushered in a new look for BU Law. We launched a re-designed Web site featuring more robust news sections that will allow you to keep up with the latest happenings and events. We hope you will use it – and enjoy it. We welcome your feedback and suggestions. Soon, you will receive our new, re-designed LL.M. bulletin, which promises to be just as attractive.

American Law and IP Classes of 2007
This year’s entering LL.M. in American Law class boasts 66 talented lawyers from 26 countries. (Thank you for your referrals and outreach that helped deliver this distinguished group!) For the first time, China took honors as the top feeder country (10 students), followed by Japan (seven students), Korea (six students) and France (five students). The LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law Program remains small – and highly selective. We have one current student – a former BU Law J.D. student, John Song, who is an attorney with Kim and Chang in Seoul, Korea.
In the fall, we welcomed 17 visiting foreign exchange students from our partner schools, including three from our new partner in Madrid, Spain: Universidad Pontificia de Comillas (ICADE).
Recently back from the NY ISIP job fair and a ski weekend at Mt. Sunapee, members of the class of 2007 are now eagerly anticipating the Spring Colloquium presentations, which will include presentations on U.S. Legislation (Professor Leonard), the U.S. War on Drugs (Professor Nilsen) and Law and Religion (Professor Wexler).

For those of you who overlapped with Jill Marden, she is happily ensconced in her new position as Director of Columbia Law School’s LL.M. Program – and set to get married in July. After 10 years, Antonietta Corsano retired in December. She was most recently the Program Coordinator in the Banking and Financial Law LL.M. Program. Between her children, grandchildren, home in Italy, wine making and various other projects, she will hardly be expected to slow down in retirement!

Admissions and Recruiting News
We are well underway with admissions for fall 2007 – with a record number of applications to date. Thanks for all your good help in speaking with interested prospects and, in particular, with admitted students. Also, thanks in advance for passing the following information to interested applicants:
New “Transfer to J.D. Program” Policy
Beginning in fall 2006, we clarified our policy with regard to BU Law LL.M. graduates who seek admission to the School’s J.D. program. Now, alumni may apply to the J.D. program in the normal course as “transfer students,” and, if admitted, receive credit for their LL.M. studies towards their J.D. degrees. This means they may complete the J.D. program with two additional years of study, instead of three. (Applicants would need to take the LSAT test, as required of all J.D. applicants.) Alumni are eligible to apply.
LL.M. Scholars Program
The School has recently expanded its support of the LL.M. Scholars Program. The program, now in its second year, awards merit-based scholarships to LL.M. students in the form of partial tuition waivers. All applicants are automatically considered.
