Young Alumni Giving
Breaking news: The cost of attending law school has risen sharply over the last several years. As a result, most of us young alumni are keenly aware of the burden of paying off our law school loans. For those of you who are not, feel free to call me and I can see if we can get you set up as a co-obligor on my loans so you can get the full young alumni experience. For me while writing that monthly check may sting, it is manageable because, as law school tuition as risen so too has the average starting salary in the private sector. However, our classmates that chose to enter the public sector have not seen such a corresponding pay increase, despite the fact that many of them work the same long hours. As a result of this burden of paying off law school loans, it has become nearly impossible for many of our fellow alumni to either enter or remain in the public sector.
To help make careers in the public sector a less burdensome choice, BU has created a loan repayment assistance program or “LRAP” for young alumni who choose to take public sector jobs. Each year, alumni working in the public sector can apply for loan assistance through the financial aid office.
This year, Dean O'Rourke moved $500,000 into LRAP, greatly increasing the program's visibility and committing the school to raising more money for this important program. Yet BU's program, which was established in 1987, is still very small compared to other schools. Because of this, we are calling on all young alumni to pitch in.
We have asked Dean O'Rourke to designate any gifts made to the Law Annual Fund from young alumni to LRAP. However, we still need to get the funds there. I would like to challenge the young alumni to raise $50,000 before the end of the fiscal year (June 30). If each of the 5,000 young alumni gave even $20, we would surpass our goal. Online donations may be made by simply clicking on the link below. Or, if you prefer, you may send a check, payable to BU Law, to 765 Commonwealth Ave., Boston, MA 02215.
With your help we can raise record funds for LRAP and allow more of our friends and classmates to receive the financial support they need. Thanks in advance.
Sincerely,

PS - making a gift through the YAC DOES count toward the Law Firm Challenge!
