Letter from the Campaign Chair
Dear BU Law community,
We recently passed the mid-way point of BU Law’s first comprehensive fundraising campaign and already we have a great deal to celebrate. Since the kickoff of our Building on Excellence Campaign in 2010, alumni and friends of the law school have committed more than $51 million toward our overall $80 million goal. Most notably, we are delighted to report we reached and will likely surpass our goal for donations to the Law Building Fund. This extraordinary outpouring of support means BU Law will now have first class facilities to match its historically top-notch faculty and student body. With the dedication of the Sumner M. Redstone Building in 2014, and the reopening of a completely renovated and reinvented law tower in 2015, BU Law is inaugurating a new and exciting era.
This is all thanks to the hard work and generosity of our donors. Their support, and yours, is vital to the dean’s mission of making BU Law the best place in the country to be a law student.
With the building projects successfully under way, we now turn our focus to supporting the people and programs that fill those buildings and make BU Law a truly special place. In this next phase of our campaign, we ask your support for the following four priorities:
- Student Scholarships and Financial Aid: $3.2 million raised/$15 million goal
We want the very best students to attend BU Law, regardless of financial means. It is also important that our alumni be able to pursue their career aspirations without burdensome debt.
- Professorships and Faculty Support: $3.3 million raised/$10 million goal
Endowed professorships help us recruit and retain faculty that was once again ranked #1 for teaching by the Princeton Review. These coveted positions acknowledge excellence and provide funding for scholarly research and pursuits.
- Academic Programming: $1.1 million raised/$8 million goal
BU Law has always been a place of innovation and forward-thinking. Donor support allows us to sustain our areas of excellence and important experiential learning opportunities like clinics, externships, and study abroad and to continually respond to the evolving needs of students, alumni, and their employers.
- Law Fund: $5 million raised/$7 million goal
The Law Fund provides the vital flexible funding used by Dean O’Rourke to create unique initiatives, leverage unforeseen opportunities, and provide additional financial aid like scholarships and public interest fellowships.
On behalf of Boston University School of Law, I thank all of our generous donors, and encourage everyone to visit the magnificent new Sumner M. Redstone Building. It stands as a testament not only to those who made it possible, but also to the value and fondness so many hold for BU Law.
