The Certificate in International Business Law enables lawyers to access the innovative online and blended-learning courses of the Executive LLM in International Business Law, without having to leave their jobs and commit to a degree program. Students are required to complete one three credit course, and can select from the wide array of elective courses when choosing their remaining courses. A minimum of 12 credits is required for the Certificate.
While the Executive LLM requires applicants to have a minimum of three years of work experience, the Certificate in International Business Law is open to new lawyers. All other Executive LLM application requirements remain in place for Certificate applicants. A strong performance in the Certificate program will be considered for any applicants who wish to be considered for the Executive LLM degree.
International Business Transactions & Agreements
3 Credits. Virginia Greiman. Format: Blended-online & all-online. IBT&A covers the transactional approach to legal problems encountered in commercial and financial business ventures that cross national borders. Topics include: form of doing business, including formation of contracts and the range of issues presented-such as choice of law, choice of forum, commercial terms, force majeure, sales, distribution and agency law, franchise, licensing arrangements, and foreign direct investments; the operations of the institutions of the World Trade Organization; investment in free trade areas such as the European Union and NAFTA; and issues of transfer of intellectual property and international dispute resolution. Students will gain exposure to analyzing various international business agreements and documents including global joint venture agreements and privatization provisions, sales and letters of credit, distribution and franchise agreements, international development and investment agreements, letters of intent for mergers and acquisitions, and technology licensing agreements. IBT&A is offered both in the blended online and all-online formats.
Students may complete their remaining 9 credits through any of the Executive LLM required or elective courses.

What does blended-online mean?
Blended-online is the distinctive instructional style of the Executive LLM program at BU Law, involving both online learning and in-person, residential learning. The two-week residential sessions residential courses are reinforced by pre-arrival preparation work online, and post-residential follow up assignments online.
I am interested in taking a residential class. Does this program allow me to do that?
Yes! The program does allow students to take blended courses that contain a mix of online instruction and two-week residential sessions in Boston and Budapest. Students seeking full-time residential programs should look at BU Law’s other top-ranked LLM Programs.
When can I apply for admission?
Similarly to the Executive LLM, students are eligible to apply for entry into the certificate program for the fall, spring and summer semesters.
Are students eligible for financial aid?
The Certificate in International Business Law program has been approved for federal financial aid for qualified students.
Are the admissions requirements for the Certificate in International Business Law different from the Executive LLM requirements?

What is the cost of this program?

The Certificate in International Business Law received American Bar Association acquiescence at the April 14-16, 2016 ABA Accreditation Committee meeting.
