The Boston University School of Law Libraries are private research facilities that exist primarily to support the educational and research needs of the Boston University community. The BU School of Law Libraries are open to all Boston University students, faculty, staff, and alumni. The Law School building hours are 7 am to 11 pm. A card swipe entry system is in place from 8 pm to 11 pm. Alumni who need access after 8 pm should contact the facilities manager at 617-358-2300 to obtain a card.

Researchers who are not part of the BU community and who have received prior permission may access the Law Libraries during the following hours: Monday through Thursday, 9 am–8 pm; Friday and Saturday, 9 am–5 pm; and Sunday, noon–8 pm during the academic year. Special hours for summer and holidays may apply, please call 617-353-3151 to confirm open hours before visiting.

Current students, faculty, and staff from colleges and universities in the Boston Library Consortium and the New England Law Library Consortium can access the Libraries during the above hours for specific research projects after filling out an affiliated visitor application form and presenting their consortium or university identification cards.

All other researchers who desire the use of unique materials in the library’s collections must request prior permission to access the library for short-term legal research. Please contact Ellen Frentzen, Associate Director for Administration & Access Services, to request access privileges. If permission is given, upon arrival researchers must complete an application form and present a valid photo identification at the Fineman circulation desk.

In order to maintain a quiet atmosphere for law student studying, group study rooms, carrels, the Quiet Reading Room, and the Pappas Reading Room, including its lower level, are reserved for the exclusive use of the law community. Members of the BU Community are welcome in all other library spaces, including the Mezzanine-level Collaborative Area (Garo Lounge) and the Fineman Reading Room on the 3rd floor. If you need to access library materials shelved in the Pappas Reading Room or its lower level, please speak with library staff about access or retrieval.

Users who need assistance to access or retrieve materials from the Law Libraries’ collections should visit or contact the Fineman circulation desk located on the second floor of the Law School at 765 Commonwealth Ave, 617-353-3151.
