Latin American Studies Undergraduate Research Opportunity

Boston University’s Latin American Studies Program [LASP], part of the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies, offers a limited number of research grants for undergraduates to do field work in Latin America or to study the Latino/Latina population in the United States.  Each LASP grant is likely to be no larger than $750. We highly recommend that all applicants for the LASP competition also apply to BU’s UROP [www.bu.edu/urop/] for co-financing so as to acquire sufficient funds for carrying out your research objectives.

The deadline for the competition is MARCH 25. All recipients of awards must be enrolled at BU at the time they do the research. Awards will be announced by APRIL 1.

If you are interested, your application should include the following:

  1. A one page statement in which you define your topic of study and your methodology [what you will do and how]
  2. the amount of funding you request from LASP, indicating specifically for what [i.e., an itemized budget]
  3. indicate when you plan to do the field research.
  4. a letter of recommendation from the faculty member who will oversee your project; you must share your proposal with the advisor before applying

You may want to use the opportunity to do research for a project associated with graduation with Honors.

Send your submission electronically to iffland@bu.edu [with the header ‘Undergraduate Field Grant Application’] AND send a ‘hard copy’ to Professor James Iffland, Department of Romance Studies, 718 Commonwealth Ave.

ALL AWARDEES MUST SUBMIT A REPORT OF THEIR RESEARCH UPON THEIR RETURN.

Good luck, and we hope you take advantage of this research opportunity!
