We began our project by interviewing parents of children with and without disabilities to better grasp their understanding of concepts of participation and environment. Results of this qualitative research were compared with a review of existing literature, available measures, and prior work by members of our investigative team to further inform our thinking about how to accurately and feasibly capture these complex concepts through measurement. In addition, interviews conducted with children with disabilities complemented this process.
What we learned from this process are:
(1) The concept of participation appears to be multidimensional in nature.
(2) Parents talk about participation and environment together or at the same time.
