Emily Hainze received her PhD in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University. She specializes in 19th and 20th century American literature, with a focus on race, gender and sexuality. Her current research focuses on the literary and cultural history of women’s criminalization and incarceration in the late 19th and early 20th century U.S. She has received the CLIR Mellon Dissertation Research Fellowship in Original Sources, a Public Humanities Fellowship from Humanities New York, and Columbia’s Mellon interdisciplinary graduate fellowship. Her work has recently appeared in American Literature and Public Books. She has taught courses in American literature, gender and sexuality studies, and expository writing, including classes for Columbia’s Justice-in-Education Initiative, which offers coursework for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated students.
