Web Maker

A short course in designing and bulding a web site.

Step 6: Publish the Site

Going Public

You have created a World Wide Web site, consisting of several pages. And you have tested the site to make sure that it works with Netscape. Now you are ready to publish the site so that others can read it. You can publish your site in two ways:

...on an Intranet, where it can be seen by all the people on the local computer network in your home or school; or

...on the Internet, where it can be seen by anyone connected to the Word Wide web.

Publishing on an intranet

The easiest way to publish your site is through file sharing on an AppleTalk network. If the computers at home or at school are connected to the same printer, then in most cases you can use file sharing to allow others to connect to your site. Follow these steps:

1. Turn on File Sharing on your computer. This is done with the Sharing Setup Control Panel under the Apple menu. You must also use the Users and Groups Control Panel to allow guests to connect. Just double-click the Guest icon and check off the box. Finally, set the sharing for your hard drive by selecting your drive's icon, then choosing Sharing from the File menu, and checking off all the boxes.

2. Go to another computer on the network, and connect to your computer. To do this, open the Chooser, click on the AppleShare icon, and look for the name of your computer. Select your computer, and connect as a Guest. You will see an icon for your computer on the Desktop of this computer.

3. Open your home page with Netscape. Open Netscape. From the File menu, choose Open File. Click on the Desktop button, then find the name of your computer's hard drive in the list. Open it, then open the Desktop Folder, and within that you will see the folder for your site. From here, open your home page file.

If your school has a World Wide Web server such as WebStar set up on its network, then you may publish your site on this server. Follow these steps:

1. Find out who is the Webmaster for the server at your school.

2. Ask the Webmaster for permission to publish your web site on the server.

3. Follow the Webmaster's instructions on how to copy your files to the WebStar folder on the server.

Publishing on the Internet

To publish your Home Pages so that everyone in the world can see them, you must copy your files to a World Wide Web Server that's connected to the internet. Your school may have such a server. And if you subscribe to an internet provider, they will have a server that you can use. Your first step is to find out who the webmaster is for the WWW server you want to use. Then you should contact the webmaster. In most cases, it's best to send an email to the webmaster. Ask them if you may post your pages to the server, and ask for detailed instructions on how to send your files to the server.

When you receive permission, you can follow the webmaster's instructions to get your site published. In most cases, you will simply copy your home pages and image files to a special folder that the webmaster sets up on the WWW server just for you. Once your files are posted on the WWW server, the webmaster will tell you the URL for your web site. To see your site, you will use Netscape to connect to that URL and view your site.
