2005 Cultural Heritage Legal Summary
Journal of Field Archaeology 30 (2005) 457--463

The legal developments of the past year that affect the practice of archaeology world-wide were characterized by advances in the ratification and implementation of world conventions and by significant new attention to the conduct of museums and dealers with respect to looted antiquities, particularly objects from Italy. At the same time, it is becoming increasingly clear that the archaeological community must take a greater participatory role in the development of the law and in law enforcement efforts if gains in the protection of archaeological sites from a variety of threats are to be maintained. These legal developments from the perspective of law and archaeology are summarized in this overview of the year 2005.
