Abstract

John A. Gifford
A Survey of Shipwreck Sites off the Southwestern Coast of Turkey
Journal of Field Archaeology 1 (1974) 23--25

Using a combination of remote sensing techniques (side-scan sonar and underwater television), and visual inspection of SCUBA-diving, 18 wrecks ranging in age from preclassical to 19th century A.C. were located between Bodrum and Cape Gelidonya. The majority of wreck sites were known to local sponge divers. All except one site have been looted; nevertheless, eight sites are judged worthy of further investigation.
