Interpreting Typological Variation of Middle Paleolithic Scrapers: Function Style, or Sequence of Reduction?
Journal of Field Archaeology 11 (1984) 431--436

Variability in Middle Paleolithic assemblages is usually expressed in differential frequencies of various tool types. In this paper, three different classes of scrapers (single, double, and convergent types) from the site of Bisitun, Iran, are analyzed in terms of their morphology. It is suggested that the variability within these types reflects a continuous sequence of reduction, instead of three distinct functional or stylistic classes.
