Site Destruction Halted in Ontario
In June, 1985, the Minister of Citizenship and Culture in Ontario,
Canada, issued a stop-order against George Armstrong and George
Armstrong Co., Ltd., to halt the company's logging and gravel
extraction at Manitou Mounds National Historic Site near Fort
Francis. This action was taken under the Ontario Heritage Act.
Relic Hunters Jailed in Virginia Three treasure hunters were sentenced to a year in jail for digging more than 60 holes, searching for Civil War artifacts at Richmond National Battlefield Park in Virginia. The men were convicted of violating the Archaeological Resources Protection Act.
Report on U.S. Federal Historic Preservation Case Law
The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation has released a report
titled Federal Historic Preservation Case Law (1985). Its three
parts include an extensive overview of federal statutes pertaining to
historic preservation, a digest of 89 federal court opinions involving
the National Historic Preservation Act, the Advisory Council's
regulations and related preservation provisions, and a comprehensive
index to the digests. Copies of this publication are available from

USIA Issues Information on Convention on Cultural Property
Implementation Act
The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States
Information Agency has issued a report containing information on the
Cultural Property Implementation Act, a fact sheet about the Advisory
Committee, and texts of both P.L. 97-446, Title III, and the UNESCO
