Journal of Field Archaeology 8 (1981) 391--404

The Royal Ontario Museum's investigations at Pampa Grande, a Moche V site (ca. 600--700 A.C.) in the Lambayeque Valley on the North Coast of Peru, sought to clarify Moche social, political, and economic organization in an effort to understand the context within which urbanism developed in this area. The investigation of storage facilities was a part of this effort and results of the author's work on storehouses at Pampa Grande are presented here. Problems of identification of storage structures, contents, and differentiation of storage function are discussed. The significance of such storage in Moche V is addressed and a model of late Moche state organization is presented.
