Benjamin Madley on Patterns of Genocide: California and Beyond
- Starts: 5:00 pm on Wednesday, December 2, 2020
- Ends: 6:15 pm on Wednesday, December 2, 2020
Benjamin Madley's work provides a unique opportunity to hear about the mechanisms of genocidal politics within the United States. Madley's scholarship shows how actions against Native American populations in California were funded and supported by the federal government. He reads these events in the context of the UN Genocide Convention formulated in 1948, to raise the question how the crime of genocide can apply to actions that took place before the term had been coined and firmed up in international law.
