Study in B-1/B-2 Immigration Classification

As of April 12, 2002, U.S. Federal regulations (8CFR 214.2(b) and 248.1(c)) prohibit visitors in B-1/B-2 immigration status from enrolling as full-time students.  Prior to beginning a full-time course of study, B-1/B-2 visitors must apply for and be approved for a change of status to F-1 or J-1 student classification by the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

Visitors in B-1/B-2 status may take a class that is considered short-term and recreational in nature (e.g. one English language class or a sports or music class).

If you are in B-1 or B-2 immigration classification and are interested in attending Boston University, please consult with an advisor at the ISSO for guidance on maintaining lawful status.
