Processing
an F-1 Transfer While Remaining in the U.S.
To transfer your F-1 student status to Boston University while
remaining in the U.S., you must already be in lawful F-1 status.
If you believe that you may not be in lawful F-1 status, please
see the section below entitled "Special Information
for Students Who Are Not in Lawful F-1 Status."
To process this type of transfer, please follow these steps:
- Complete Section 1 of the form entitled "Eligibility Confirmation
Form for School Transfer by an F-1 Student." (You should
have received this form if you were issued a Boston University
I-20 marked for transfer in item 3c. If you did not receive this
form, please contact
the ISSO immediately to have it sent to you.)
- Give this transfer form to your international student advisor
at your current school, and ask them to complete Section 2 and
then to either return the form to you or send it directly to the
Boston University ISSO.
- When you arrive at Boston University, visit the ISSO and ask
that your USCIS transfer be processed. You must bring the following
documents with you:
- The completed "Eligibility Confirmation Form for School
Transfer by an F-1 Student" (if the international student
advisor at your previous school gave the completed form to you)
- Your Boston University I-20 form
- All I-20 forms which you used to attend other U.S. schools
- Your passport and Form I-94 (small white card usually stapled
inside your passport)
Processing Deadline
In order to comply with USCIS regulations and maintain lawful F-1 student
status, you must process your transfer at the ISSO no later
than 15 days after classes begin. If you plan to work on
the Boston University campus, you must have your transfer processed
before beginning work. Special Information for Students Who Are
Not in Lawful F-1 Status If you believe that you may not be in
lawful F-1 status, you should immediately contact
an ISSO advisor.
If you are not in lawful F-1 status, you must address
this situation either by
- Applying to the USCIS for "reinstatement" to lawful
F-1 status OR
- Leaving the U.S. and reentering using the Boston University
I-20 form.
You should discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each option
with an ISSO advisor before choosing a course of action.
