*Estimates are based on the Board of Trustees’ Estimate of Academic and Living Expenses and the annual cost for health insurance coverage for BU employee; actual costs may be higher depending on lifestyle.  Funding requirements are subject to change at any time.

Boston University salary, per diem, stipends, grants and other non-salary funding should be reflected in the appointment letter and on page 3 of the scholar's Form B.

Funding from sources other than BU (private sponsor, ministry of the scholar's government, scholarship counsel, personal funds, etc.) may be considered towards meeting the funding requirements.  Original documentation of non-BU funding must be submitted with the J intake forms.  Documentation should be in English or accompanied by an English translation and the local currency should be clearly referenced.

Please note the following when submitting non-BU funding verification to ISSO:

  • Original documentation must also be provided at the Consulate when requesting a J-1 visa; scholars should therefore obtain two original copies from their funding source.
  • For verification of personal funds please submit original letter/statement from financial institution confirming adequate funding for the duration of the stay at BU.
  • In cases where the documentation reflects a range in funding, the ISSO will use the lowest figure in the range when evaluating sufficient financial support

Host departments should NOT use this funding estimate as a standard to calculate salary. Researchers, faculty members and other visiting scholars paid by Boston University should be awarded a salary that meets department and university equity standards and is commensurate with the scholar's related experience.
