The ISSO will close for the Boston University Intersession break beginning at 5:00 pm on Friday, December 23, 2011 and will re-open at 9:00 am on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. International students and scholars with urgent matters may leave a voice message on the ISSO main phone line (617-353-3565) or send an email to isso@bu.edu. Messages will be checked daily and will be evaluated to determine urgency.

New Fields of Study Added to STEM List

A technical upgrade to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) now permits the ISSO to extend the immigration documents for scholars in J-1 Professor and Research Scholar category for up to five years. This update to SEVIS was required in order to implement recent changes to J-1 regulations, including stricter restrictions on the consecutive use of J-1 Professor and Research Scholar categories.

A special workshop on "non-resident alien" tax filing issues will be offered for BU international students and scholars. No advance sign-up necessary.

Effective immediately, the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) is now requiring all international students in F-1 immigration status to prove that they are currently employed or have been offered specific employment when applying for a Social Security Number.

All new F-1 students and J-1 exchange visitors must pay a one-time SEVIS fee of $100 to the Department of Homeland Security prior to visa application, entry to the US or application for benefits of their immigration status to supplement the administration and maintenance costs of the Student and Exchange Information System (SEVIS). Please visit the SEVIS Fee section of the ISSO website at http://www.bu.edu/isso/sevis/fee.html for more information.
