Employment Verification for all F-1 Students Applying for a Social Security Card

October 13, 2004

Effective immediately, the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) is now requiring all international students in F-1 immigration status to prove that they are currently employed or have been offered specific employment when applying for a Social Security Number. All F-1 students will be required to obtain a written certification from their current or prospective on-campus employer as well as a certification from the ISSO before submitting an application to the Social Security Administration.

Hiring Departments on-campus should complete the Certification of On-Campus Employment for a Social Security Number Application and give the completed and signed form to the international student to obtain ISSO certification prior to Social Security Card Application.

International Students in F-1 status who wish to apply for a Social Security Card are encouraged to read the Social Security Card Application Procedures for additional information.

Please contact a staff member at the ISSO with any questions.
