Certification of On-Campus Employment for F-1 Students Applying for a Social Security Number

The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) requires all international students in F-1 status to prove that they are currently employed or have been offered specific employment when applying for a Social Security Number. The Boston office of the SSA has issued guidelines outlining the specific information that must be certified by the hiring department when providing proof of on-campus employment.

The SSA has approved the following form to be used to certify on-campus employment for Boston University. The form must be completed by the BU hiring department and printed on department letterhead. The Certification of On-Campus Employment for a Social Security Number Application has been created in Adobe PDF format and contains fillable fields. The supervisor or hiring department should use Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader to complete all of the fields and print the form on department letterhead. The supervisor should then sign the form and give the original to the student. The student must take the completed and signed form to the ISSO to obtain an endorsement by an International Student Advisor/Designated School Official.

International Students in F-1 status who wish to apply for a Social Security Card are encouraged to read the Social Security Card Application Procedures for additional information.

If you have any questions regarding this process or form, please do not hesitate to contact the ISSO.

[These procedures went into effect on October 13, 2004 based on a rule published in the Federal Register (Vol. 69, No. 176)]
