University Sponsorship of Employment-Based U.S. Permanent Residence
(Green Card) Petitions
The Office of the Provost
has recently updated policies and procedures to obtain approval
for Boston University sponsorship of employment-based U.S. permanent
residence applications due to federal regulatory changes implemented
on July 16, 2007 . The new policy explains:
- Which positions are eligible for university sponsorship
- Suggested timing of sponsorship requests
- Procedures for the retention of outside immigration counsel
- Payment of financial expenses (including legal fees) associated
with the application
- Process of obtaining university approval for sponsorship

to University Provost for Sponsorship of Foreign Nationals for Permanent
Residence Form (PDF)
When an employer agrees to sponsor a foreign national employee
for an application for U.S. permanent residence, the employer is
responsible for submitting the application on behalf of the employee
to a number of different federal agencies which is why there is
a strict approval process at the university. We suggest that the
department chair prepare and forward the following documentation
to the appropriate Dean of the School of College for consideration:
- A comprehensive one-page narrative justification for requesting
sponsorship that describes the scholar's background, training,
education and contributions to BU as well as the department's
plans for long term employment of this scholar
- The scholar's CV/resume - illustrating the scholar's education,
publications, awards, memberships, key accomplishments and other
relevant qualifications
- A completed "Request to University Provost for Sponsorship
of Foreign Nationals for Permanent Residence Form" (see link above)
The Dean will then forward
this documentation to Provost Campbell for final approval.
Provost Campbell will send written notification to the Boston University
Office of General Counsel. An Associate General Counsel will forward
a formal response to the scholar, the department chair and the Dean.
Provided the request is approved, the response will include the
procedures for initiating the application as well as the contact
information for the local immigration attorney that Boston University
will work with throughout the application process . This attorney
will consult with the scholar and the department to evaluate the
scholar's qualifications, prepare and submit a petition and monitor
the application until adjudication. Please contact the Office of
the Provost on the Charles River Campus for further guidance.
