Greetings from the ISSO scholar team!

The Communiqué is an on-going series of messages to departments who sponsor international scholars at Boston University. With the Communiqué, we will offer information that will help make more effective — and streamline — the processing of scholar immigration-related documents and petitions. We hope you find the Communiqué a useful tool in working with the ISSO and in successfully hiring and sponsoring scholars from around the world.

Spotlight on “Tickler” Notices

As a courtesy, the ISSO periodically issues “tickler” e-mail messages notifying departments of upcoming work permission and document expiration dates.

The “tickler” is a memo — in email format – based on a report run from our databases that finds expiration dates in the upcoming two months for BU-sponsored J-1 scholars, and in the next six months for all other statuses.

Receipt of a tickler is a signal that either the department or the scholar needs to act soon. What needs to be done, and who needs to do it, is always described in the tickler. The tickler is sent out well in advance because certain actions may need weeks or months to complete. (See our processing times at http://www.bu.edu/isso/administrators/table/index.html).

The tickler needs to be completed and returned to the ISSO promptly

The ISSO uses ticklers to anticipate any immigration-related work on behalf of the scholar and the BU department. In the case of terminations, the returned tickler is often the ISSO’s only notification and we use that information to notify government agencies as required. Prompt return of a tickler is critical.

We hope this information is helpful and clarifies the importance of the ISSO ticklers.

As always, if there are any questions or concerns, please feel free to call us at (617) 353-3565 or to e-mail Naomi Moca at njmoca@bu.edu or James Leck at jleck@bu.edu. Please call the ISSO if you ever desire clarification about a particular tickler, or have questions about how to proceed.
