Contraves Brashaer Systems 1.5 m telescope. This rugged, robustly field-tested
instrument is an off-the-shelf commodity which has already been
operated at very low temperature sites. This design can be easily modified
to build the 1.8 m AIRO telescope.
We compare in Table 4 the expected sensitivity of AIRO with other
telescopes, both on the ground and in space.
For survey work at K, L, and M bands, a
2-m class telescope at the South Pole achieves comparable or
better sensitivity than an 8-m telescope on Mauna Kea.

Schematic of AIRO data pipeline. The architecture of the Data Cycle
System will enable users, tools and information to be in different
locations and operate from different platforms. The Web Services layer
will provide user access to services. The Services layer provides a
flexible means to combine tools and information in a manner that is
customized to the needs of each activity. The Broker provides an
abstract layer that enables access to components that may be
distributed on the network and may have a variety of software
representations. Many of these components are already in place.
