Concentration in International Relations
Twelve courses and two pre-requisites (CAS EC 101 and CAS EC 102, see below) are required for an undergraduate concentration in international relations. The twelve courses include four required principal courses, four courses from a functional track, and four courses from a regional track (for details on tracks, see below). At least two courses must be taken at the 400 level or above. A grade of C or higher is required in all principal and track courses. Students concentrating in international relations are encouraged to fulfill their CAS mathematics requirements in statistics. Concentrators are encouraged to study abroad for one or more semesters; courses taken overseas must be approved by the department in order to receive credit toward the concentration.
CGS students, upon admission to CAS, will be given credit for CGS SS 202 as a substitute for CAS HI 350.
Minor concentration in International Relations
A minor concentration in international relations consists of six courses, with a grade of C or higher. This includes the four required principal courses and two other courses, of the student's choosing, from any of the ten tracks.
Required Principal Courses
Required principal courses are designed to develop a general understanding of the economic, political, historic, and geographic factors that influence the international system. Students must take all four of the courses listed below; students electing the functional track in "International Economics and Business" must take CAS EC 392 or SMG IM 345 in place of CAS IR 292. Please note that CAS IR 292 requires as pre-requisites CAS EC 101 and CAS EC 102.

International Relations Tracks
The Department of International Relations offers courses in ten distinct subfields, known as "tracks." Tracks are divided into two types: functional and regional. Undergraduate concentrators must select one functional track and one regional track. Four courses must be taken in each track. No course may be used in more than one track. This arrangement is designed to give the undergraduate concentrator a reasonable facility in an important functional subfield of international relations as well as an understanding of a least one region of the world.
