Admissions

Admission into any of our six MA programs requires that the applicant have completed a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the United States, or an equivalent degree from an institution in another country. We also encourage students to develop some real-world experience, either work or volunteer, before applying to our degree programs. An academic background in International Relations or an IR related field (such as Political Science or History) is preferred but not required.

International applicants who have completed a three year (rather than four year) bachelor's degree may be required to complete further schooling before they are eligible for admission to Boston University. Please see the section for international students for more information on this topic. Please note that domestic students who completed their bachelor's degree abroad in a three year program also fall under this policy.

While we do welcome applications from students who do not have an academic background in International Relations, it is recommended that such students engage in personal reading to improve their understanding of the IR field prior to beginning their studies at BU. In particular, it is recommended that such students develop a background in the basic concepts of IR as well as a good working knowledge of the major events of international affairs from the end of World War II to the present. Students may find it helpful to peruse the syllabi for our undergraduate courses IR 271, Introduction to International Relations, and IR 350, History of International Relations since 1945, in developing their readings.
