Summer Term: May 21st to July 2nd, 2010 The Dakar Senegalese Studies Program offers students the opportunity to spend six weeks living and studying in Dakar, Senegal’s vibrant, coastal capital. Dakar blends modern amenities with the rich cultures and traditions of diverse ethnic groups. Senegal, Africa’s westernmost country, has played a significant role in the politics, arts, and culture of West Africa. Coursework will introduce students to Senegalese culture through its literature, arts, and religion. Through West African drumming and dance, students will be introduced to essential aspects of indigenous cultures, their collective issues and values, and the philosophies that sustain them. Students may also choose to study Wolof, one of the principal languages spoken in Senegal. Excursions complement the coursework and include Gorée Island and Saint-Louis, among others. The program stresses immersion through homestays with Senegalese families, cultural events, and an on-site orientation which will introduce students to Senegalese cultural values. Upon successful completion of the program, students earn eight Boston University credits.
