Applying for Study Abroad

Preliminary Selection of a Program(s)

When beginning to research study abroad programs you will find that there are a number of resources available to you.  In the BUIP office there are several publications that might be helpful but the internet is probably the best resource for researching the great variety of programs.

Try IIE Passport, Study Abroad.com, and GoAbroad.com.

The International Programs Offices maintains a library with guide books (IIE Academic Year Abroad for example) and sample brochures from a number of programs.

As you narrow your choices be sure to request additional information from the institution providing the study abroad program and consult with the Assistant Director for External Programs in the BUIP office to be sure that the programs or institutions are recognized for transfer of credit.

You must select a program that will issue a transcript from a degree granting college or university (foreign or domestic).  “Diplomas” and “Certificates” are not acceptable.  For more on this please see the Credits page.

Applying for Study Abroad

Admissions criteria, which are set by the institutions abroad or the sponsors of the study abroad programs, may vary.  Please check with the provider concerning the admissions criteria for the program in which you are interested. You will apply directly to the institution or program, sending the applications yourself.

Many applications require the signature of a B.U. administrator and may request the signature of a “dean" or "director" of study abroad or your advisor.

This document should be signed by Assistant Director for External Programs David Lamitie, at the Division of International Programs. You should submit the completed approval form to this office along with an unofficial copy of your B.U. transcript issued by the registrar (not from the link). Your materials will be reviewed and returned directly to the program provider. We will contact you if we have any questions or concerns.
