Innovate@BU Impact Film Competition

angela-compagnone-574156-unsplashNew ideas come in all shapes in sizes: new businesses, nonprofits, community service, advocacy, arts and culture projects, and more. Despite their differences on the outside, every new idea has at least two things in common – they have their own story and seek to create impact.

This summer, Innovate@BU is launching the Impact Film Competition. We’re asking current BU students to create a 90-second flm that tells the story of a person, place, thing, or idea that is creating impact.

Whether you’re studying film-making, inspired by a fellow BU Terrier or local changemaker, or you’re working on an idea of your own, we want you to tell us a story of impact.

Participants will have the chance to win a cash prize for the filmmaking team and for the featured subject of their film! Check out judging and prize details below.

  • Does the impact idea I share in my film have to be my own? Nope! You can tell the story of something you are working on or of a person, place, thing, or idea that you know, have heard of, or maybe you haven’t even met yet!
  • What if I don’t have a specific idea for a film subject? We can help! Innovate@BU can introduce you to dozens of BU Terriers that are working on new ideas. Many of them are in Boston for the summer participating in the Summer Accelerator program!
  • Can I submit more than one film? Please only submit one film per individual/group.
  • Does the impact I share in my film have to take place at BU or in Boston? Nope! The subject of your film could be taking place anywhere in the world.
  • Can my film be longer than 90 seconds? Nope, 90 seconds is the max.
  • I’ve never made a film before. How “professional” does my film need to be? All skill levels are welcome and encouraged to participateUsing a smartphone to make this film is totally acceptable.Below, we’ve provided tons of great resources that can help filmmakers of all levels and provide a variety of free tools that you can use too. We’re most interested in the story of impact, not the level of film making skills you have.
  • Do I have to pay anything to participate? Not at all.
  • How will my film be used or distributed once submitted? Does Innovate@BU own by film? Innovate@BU does not own your film, however, by submitting a film to the competition, you allow Innovate@BU to share your films on social media, website, and additional marketing channels. Credit to filmmakers will always be included. Additionally, please read through the terms and conditions to ensure that you follow proper copyright and privacy laws when making the film.
  • Can I submit a film that I created before the competition started? No. While films can use research, footage, and material that was previously generated, the final film should be specifically created for this competition.
