Taking part is fun, but winning really rocks. Sure, BU’s 500 student-athletes love what they do, but when you’re competing at the highest level of college athletics in 23 NCAA Division I varsity sports, results count.
The Terriers, members of the America East Conference and the Hockey East Association, turned in yet another remarkable year in 2010–11, highlighted by a record-breaking 11th America East Commissioner’s Cup. BU has held that honor, bestowed on the conference’s best all-around athletic department, nine times in the past 10 years.
Four Terrier squads (men’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s soccer, women’s tennis) captured conference titles, and the women’s ice hockey team reached the NCAA title game in just its sixth year as a varsity program. In all, four teams and 11 individual athletes powered their way through to NCAA postseason competition last season.
Over the past seven years, BU has claimed a staggering 43 conference championships, raised the Beanpot four times and earned the University’s fifth men’s ice hockey national championship.
Staying true to our motto of Excellence in Athletics, Academics, and Community, our department-wide grade-point average was over 3.0 last year and our student-athletes combined to participate in over 4,500 hours of community service and outreach.
We call this success Points of Terrier Pride. The Dog Pound, our loyal and loud fans, call it another rocking year. And the volume will be up again next year. And beyond. Check out what the future holds for Terrier Athletics in the department’s strategic plan.
